's presidential debate. in just a moment, i will be joined for an exclusive interview by both governor romney and his runningmate, congressman paul ryan. even the most left-wing observers have conceded that their candzidate bombed without his teleprompter last night. obama aides are trying to pin it all on mitt romney. believe it or not, they are accusing the governor of lying. of course, they are the ones that are. watch this. >> again and again and again, he told the story to the american people that is completely... in contrast with what he said before and unfounded in fact. and that's going to catch up with him. i give him credit for strong performance. i give him an "f" for being honest with the american people. >> sean: for 90 minutes, president obama lied about his record and president obama lied about what he would do in a second term. you want proof? here it is. >> if you want to be president, you owe the american people the truth, the truth. >> the fact check. >> this claim is based on a fiscal fiction. >> the bipartisan nonprofit committee has called that a gimmick. the president i

has something to celebrate. in a cnn poll, 67% said romney won the first presidential debate. 25% think president obama was the victor. >> there were no real knockout punches thrown last night, more like a series of glancing blows with romney the aggressor on taxes, jobs, health care. putting the president really on the defensive. we're lucky to be joined by dana bash. >> i think you're right. it s a debate between a rusty president obama and a well rehearsed mitt romney. >> reporter: right out of the gate, it was clear, mitt romney came to play. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle down government would work. >> reporter: president obama sounded a familiar alarm, warning of romney's been there, done that economics. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch made in 2001 and 2003. and we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years. >> reporter: but whether it was health care, jobs, or medicare, it was

as promised, here is fact checking from last night's presidential debate. starting out, romney's claim that he would not raise any taxes on middle class americans. the first problem with this is that it is just the latest in a series of flip-flops. first he promises tax cuts across the board then he says don't expect any big tax breaks because he's also getting rid of deductions. now he says he will fight for middle class tax relief. as the president pointed out last night romney plans on paying for tax cuts by closing loopholes but he still will not say which ones and even if he does close them, that still doesn't pay for his $5 trillion worth of tax cuts. that means he would basically have to get rid of middle class deductions which effectively raises middle class rates. next up, healthcare. yep. romney really made a death panel reference, referring to the independent payment advisory board which does have the power to force medicare cuts. but it is explicitly prohibited from rationing care or restricting benefits so no

to 1980 to find a better republican presidential debate. i don't know where mitt romney's been, but my god, he showed up last night. >> for all the talk about zingers and everything else coming in, he was comfortable. his jokes were funny. he wasn't forced. he wasn't stilted. and he came with information. there have been complaints over and over -- we've made them here -- that this campaign's been about nothing. that was an incredibly substantive debate on both sides. >> it was. >> two smart guys with two very different visions of america having an actual debate. >> willie, i'm so glad you said that because the middle of the debate last night, we've been trashing both camps for saying nothing. and i looked up at the screen, as dysfunctional as american politics are, and i went, oh, my god, we've got two really intelligent guys here. >> exactly. >> one guy that's been extraordinarily successful in the business world and the other that's been extraordinarily successful in the political world, and they're fighting out two world views. >> i got the sense, though, that president obama was not r

for the president to say, mitt romney, do you support reinstating glass-steagall? i do, your vice presidential pick does? so will that make the banks smaller? so, again, in a debate, you can't depend on jim lehrer to do your job. as we say in a fight, baby, if you're going to swing, swing. >> is that what we say in a fight? >> right. when it's time to fight, you've got to swing. >> the president didn't even have his gloves on last night. it's almost like he didn't know the facts -- he didn't know to make the glass-steagall argument. >> actually, he does know facts, but it's a question of whether or not you want to engage in that way. he has to, and i think this morning, he realizes it. >> guess what, we have 90 more minutes to talk about all of this. still ahead this morning on "starting point," a big burning question during the debate was about the size of government. is a theme that kentucky senator rand paul likes to talk about. he's got a new book out called "government bullies." he'll join us to talk about that, coming up next. a mattress. a sausage link. mermaid. honey!? driftwood. come on, y

, right? the presidential debate last night was ugly. it was an ugly night because the truth left the building. it took a beating. give mitt romney credit, though. he was an all-american liar last night. and the president seemed to leave his best material, his best game at home. for millions of americans, it was extremely hard to watch mitt romney lie the way he did and get away with it. >> first of all, i don't have a $5 trillion tax cut. i don't have a tax cut of the scale that you're talking about. my view is we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class. >> the lie is so outrageous, it's breathtaking. mitt romney has campaigned across this country promoting a 20% reduction in the tax rate. his plan would give the richest 1% of americans an additional $6 o,000 tax cut. for those at the very top, the 0.1%ers, they would get a $264,000 tax cut. the cost? well, it's $456 billion per year. how do you like that? romney can eliminate every deduction from the tax code and he still will not be able to cover the cost of these tax cuts. but romney didn't need to address an
